My Top 10 Favorite Stranger Things Characters

 Favorite Characters (Top 10)

1) Will: I already explained this in my last blogpost, but basically I relate to Will the most. He has gone through so much, and shown resilience through it. He is kind, empathetic, and encourages his friends. He is also way stronger than he feels, which was showcased in Season 5 when he hijacks the hivemind.

2) Mike: Both Mike and Will get a lot of hate as characters, and I don't understand it. Mike is an excellent leader, and is encouraging to his friends. Mike is brave and in control of his emotions. He's able to be level-headed in intense situations. He is optimistic, and believes in the best outcomes. He is a really good friend, especially towards Will. He treats everyone as equals.

3) Eleven: Throughout the series Eleven learns what it means to be human, after being experimented on in a lab all of her life. She learns what love and friendship are, and fights for those she loves. She is misunderstood, and bullied for being different. She's the main hero of the series, and jumps into action whenever it's needed. She is always ready to fight.

4) Max: Max is introduced in Season 2 as being a tomboy. She's into skateboarding, and going to the arcade. Due to this the boys are very interested in her. Her character really shines in Season 4 and especially Season 5. Max deals with grief and depression after her step brother dies. Due to this the main villain of Stranger Things, Vecna targets her. She fights against Vecna, and in Season 5 travels through his memories in order to save the 12 children that are being targeted. She becomes a good friend to Eleven in Season 3, and teaches her how to be her own person.

5) Steve: In Season 1 Steve is a high school bully. However, at the end of Season 1 he steps in to help out Nancy and Jonathan after they lure a monster into Jonathan's house. From that moment on Steve's character arc is redeemed. He is quick to put himself in harms way in order to help his friends. He has a big brother role to the group of kids especially Dustin.

6) Dustin: Dustin is one of the smartest characters in the show, and is shown as the star science student. Due to this Dustin is able to come up with plans to help out the others fight against the monsters. Dustin also uses his knowledge from Star Wars, and Dungeons and Dragons to help in situations. He is loyal to his friends, and fun-loving.

7) Nancy. Nancy is another character that changes for the better. In the first season it seems like she is a goodie-two-shoes which isn't a bad thing. Throughout each season she becomes more fierce, and independent. She shows she is a hard-working woman that doesn't deserve to be put down by men. She is powerful, and brave, and a sharp shooter.

8) Joyce: Joyce is the mom of Will and Jonathan. She does everything in her power to find Will in the first season when he goes missing. She never gives up hope of bringing him home, even after everyone in town seems to have given up. After Will is brought back home she does everything in her power to be there for him as he deals with the after effects of his kidnapping. She's highly protective, and works hard to give her sons a good life as a single mom.

9) Lucas: Lucas is a loyal friend to his core group of friends. He is skeptical of El at first, and works to go find Will in the 1st season. He brings in little lines of humor to the show for instance in Season 5 he says, "Suck it Neil Armstrong" when they step foot in the Abyss which looks like a new planet. It's so subtle, but I thought it was so funny. I also love how in Season 5 how he stands up for Dustin against bullies. He is dedicated to Max and visits her everyday in the hospital, believing she will come back. He carries her comatose body out of danger, and kicks one of the monsters that was after her.

 10) Hopper: I know Hopper is higher on most people lists, but I do find him intimidating. He has been hurt many times earlier in life, and due to this his personality has been hardened. He's pessimistic at the beginning of the series, and handles others harshly. However, he is very sweet with Joyce and El. He treats, and adopts Eleven as his daughter. He is willing to fight for those he loves, even to the point of even considering sacrificing himself in Season 5. He doesn't give up on what he sets his mind to, even going as far as escaping a Russian prison.

Stranger Things and How I Relate to Will Byers

Stranger Things has become my favorite show ever. There was something about watching these kids grow up and go on adventures these past almost ten years. I was more the age of the actors in high school, but seemed to relate more to the core group of kids, especially Will. Just to say I feel like I have the most in common with Will, but not in a queer sense. The core group of kids are outcasts, and I was an outcast too during school. Stranger Things isn't a show that I thought I'd like as much as I have. The storytelling throughout the show, and having such a talented cast makes it hard not to love. The deepness of the show is something I really appreciate. Stranger Things is rarely ever surface level. It showcases deep trauma, but does it in a lighthearted/nostalgic way. The themes of supernatural entities, other dimensions, and monsters is not a show I thought I'd ever latch onto. I remember watching the first episode, which ends with the children finding Eleven.(a girl with a shaved head escaping from being experimented on.) It's pouring rain, and Will has just gone missing. When eleven first appears, you are not sure who she is, so I assumed maybe she was evil. A little girl with a shaved head in the middle of the night while its pouring rain just appears after your friend goes missing???? I was afraid it would play out like a horror movie. Stranger Things does have horror themes, but the core themes are about friendship, and love overcoming evil. Much like the IT series or even Harry Potter. (Most horror movies don't have happy endings, but this series is different.) Will goes through problems that the others can't understand, Will is more reserved, Will is very underestimated, and in turn doesn't fully believe in himself. Will is sensitive, resilient, and kind even after going through so many struggles. He uses these struggles to become stronger, and build wisdom. His DND character is known as "Will the Wise."

At the end of 2017 I remember watching Season 2 with my parents. I was rewatching the season over winter break from college with them, because they really liked the show as well. The end of 2017 was when my anxiety was at it's worst, and I experienced depression for the first time. The medication I had been on, had stopped working. Stranger Things was there when I had to wait the brutal six weeks for my new medication to start working. It was one of the only things I could focus on, and that brought me joy. In a world where I could barely move into another room without fear of causing a panic attack. One where I had to pep talk myself for 20 minutes to even get into the car. Things that should be so easy. Part of the reason Stranger Things brought me comfort, is how much I felt I related to Will in Stranger Things 2. I wasn't possessed by a demonic entity, or stolen by a monster, but I could relate to his level of anxiety. Will Byers was actually in danger, where I was in no danger at all.

In Season 1 the kids learn that other dimensions exists, and that that is where their friend Will was taken to. We first learn this through Eleven. Eleven is one of the children that was experimented on by the government in order to go into other dimensions. Eleven take's the boy's DND board flips it over, and puts the figure of the monster on it once it has been flipped. This is where she says Will is. A place that after it is discovered is coined the "Upside Down." The "Upside Down" is described as being stuck between two realities. When I am having a panic attack it feels like I'm stuck between the past, and the future, not in the present.

Season 2 of Stranger Things focuses on Will being back in the real world, and dealing with the trauma of having been taken to another dimension. In Season 2 Will has what the show refers to as episodes. During these episodes Will feels like he is back in the "Upside Down" at random times, even when he's hanging out with his friends. In these moments Will is overcome with sheer terror, which continues to happen throughout the seasons. Will's episodes it turns out are due to the fact he is being possessed by a demonic entity. However, they also do act as a picture of a typical trauma response. Will's episodes remind me a lot of how my panic attacks have felt. My body is overcome with pure terror, and I feel like I'm no longer in my body. While these episodes are happening Will expresses "I just want this to all be over." It is exhausting and terrifying to deal with consistent panic attacks. Those six weeks waiting for my medication to work felt like an eternity. I too, wanted the anxiety and depression to all be over with, but it was a slow process. I like how it shows in the show that even after Will has escaped being in the upside down, everything wasn't automatically better. We think as soon as we get out of a stressful situation that our problems will go away. However, the brain remembers. There's a whole disorder that comes after experiencing trauma. (Post traumatic Stress Disorder.) The brain fights to keep you "safe" from perceived danger. I'll probably make a whole other post about this but I highly value how much his mom is there for him in that season along with his best friend Mike. When Will is having his episodes his friend Mike is always to the first to get to him, and comfort him. He visits Will at his house, and in the hospital as he's going through this process. It's so important to have people in your life supporting you as you go through hard things. I'm so thankful for the friends who have come alongside me, and of course my mom as well. They might not know what to say, but sometimes just being there is enough. His mom and Mike are there to let him know he's not going crazy, or probably my favorite quote of the season, "If we're both going crazy, we'll go crazy together." (Mike and Will are highly underrated characters in the Stranger Things franchise, but carry so much in the series, even if it's more subtle.) You can gain a lot of comfort from others, but in the end you alone (with God) are fighting this battle.

Will is the most reserved in the friend group, but when he does speak it's powerful. I am more quiet and reserved so I can definitely relate to this a lot. People may not know what to do with your quietness, and mistake it for weakness. A lot of quiet people are misunderstood. Both introverts and extroverts are important. Introverts observe situations, they are there to really listen, and empathize with people. (Not saying that extroverts don't.) The monster took Will because he thought he was weak, but Will fought and survived alone in an alternate dimension with monsters for a week. In Season 5 Will really shines after being more of a background character for Season 3 and 4. Will fights back, and is able to do incredible things, once he finally believes in himself. After being misunderstood for so long you can become convinced that you can't do as great of things as the others can, but sometimes you can do even greater things. All this to say that for me God must be involved too. I can do incredible things because of God, but not in my own strength. Inner strength is not enough. It doesn't matter what other people think of me, because God sees me as a mighty warrior. A mighty warrior that has overcome so much in life.  In flashbacks you also see Will as a carefree, happy child. Like Will my childhood was cut short due to fear.

For me the main villain of the series Vecna can be seen as the devil trying to twist your thoughts. Pointing out your fears, and how you don't measure up to other people. You have to come up against those lies, and fight. Will is quoted in the series saying "the bad guys are smart too." The devil isn't stupid, he's a master manipulator, and he will do everything in his power to pull you away from God. He knows your deepest fears, he knows your mean thoughts, your biggest regrets, etc. In Will's case this has to do with his sexuality, and being isolated from his friends.

Will isn't just the gay character in the show who cries a lot. His story goes far more deeper than that. Let me know your favorite character of the show and why? (Just to say too I think Noah Schnapp does an excellent job portraying Will so seamlessly. You really fall for the illusion that he really is Will. The amount of fear he's able to portray during his panic attacks, etc. A lot of people like to pick on his acting, but I think it's so brilliant.)

2025 Year in Review

 January

During January I watched the first Lord of the Rings for the first time. My roommate decided to set up a movie night at our apartment to watch the extended version of the movie, which was 3 hours long. I still have not seen the other two movies, but I'm glad to finally say I watched at least 1/3 of the Lord of the Rings. I also saw Homestead in theatres with Mary, before going to Honada's afterwards. At the end of the month I watched Donnie Darko for the first time with Rebecca. We had both never seen it, but I had been wanting to watch it. There's a bunch of random actors in the movie including: Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Seth Rogan, and even Alex Greenwald. Alex Greenwald is the lead singer of my current favorite band Phantom Planet. My uncle unfortunately passed away after battling with kidney problems for years.

February

On Valentine's Day weekend I went to a Galentine's Day party where we ate tacos and made bracelets together. This get together helped me reconnect with my friend Shayna who I hadn't seen in years. For my birthday I took off work and went thrifting and Hobby Lobby. That night I ate dinner at El Camino with a few friends.

March

Since my mom has her birthday in February, and my dad has his birthday in March, I bought them a hotel package for their birthdays. A Kenosha Page put together a deal which included a night stay in a hotel overlooking Lake Michigan. $50 worth of gift cards to use at downtown Kenosha businesses. A $50 gift card to use for dinner at an Italian restaurant, and tickets to the Kenosha Comedy Club. The Kenosha Comedy Club had comedians from Saturday Night Live performing that night. While they were in town we went axe throwing, and got lunch in downtown Kenosha the next day. Church put on a benefit concert for the School of Worship and the theme was "At the Movies". Each song performed was taken from a movie. At the end of the month my sister in law played in the Pit Band for the play "Next to Normal" which is a very emotional story about the toll of Bipolar Disorder. We also had a dog party to celebrate Drake and Astro's birthdays which are one day apart. Drake was born on April 2nd, and Astro was born on April 3rd. (different years though).

April

Astro turned 1. I went to a clothing thrifting event at the Waukesha Expo Center with Shayna. It was a warmer day so we got boba tea after. I tried contacts for the first time. We had a day that got into the 50s so after church that day, a few friends and I, went out to lunch at Tacos El Norte. We went for a walk at Pet's Park afterwards and I brought Astro along. Astro had fun running and jumping into the stream while we sat on a log over the stream.

May

I took off work to go with my friend Shayna to the School of Worship open house, because Shayna was thinking of maybe attending the School of Worship. I went to the 7 mile fair for the first time with my mom. The School of Worship had a Hawaiian themed songwriting showcase. Each student writes two songs in a 9 month period and has the option to perform one of them at the showcase. On Mother's Day Rebecca and I took Astro for a walk in Bristol Woods and found a baby duckling. I went to Treasure Island Florida for 5 days with my Uncle Mike. We stayed at an AirBNB condo looking out at the Gulf of Mexico. The ocean was just across the street. We went to Clearwater beach, hung out at the beach and pool, went to Busch Gardens, went on a dinner cruise on the Coastal highway, saw a manatee, watched dolphins jumping in the water, went snorkeling, and collected seashells while enjoying the sunshine. It was definitely a top memory of 2025. The month ended with the School of Worship graduation.

June

We had another movie night at our apartment where we watched "Clueless." There was a Pet Walk put on by the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee which I took Astro to. I stopped at Collectivo afterwards for coffee. We celebrated my friend, Mary's 30th birthday by going to a golf simulator. The golf simulator was actually a ton of fun, and you could play games on a screen based on where you hit the ball. (The axe throwing place had games like this too.). I took Astro to Independence Grove Dog Park which is an off leash dog park in Illinois. At the dog park there's a mile loop trail that goes around a pond. Astro really enjoyed playing and swimming with the other dogs there. I also went to a dog friendly restaurant afterwards that had a dog menu where I got Astro chicken and rice.

July

July 3rd held my favorite memory of the year. I had found out that 3 of my favorite bands would not only be performing at Summerfest, but would also be performing on the same stage, same day, and one after the other. I was able to meet up with the members of Phantom Planet besides Alex when I first arrived at the Summerfest grounds. I am apart of their Patreon, and due to this they know me by name, and told me they'd come out of the tour bus area to talk with me. They talked to me for a few minutes before going to get ready for the show. I found other fans from the Patreon and we all got pictures with the band after they performed. iDKHOW performed after them, and then Lovejoy went on. Lovejoy hadn't performed anywhere in over a year, so their first show back was in Milwaukee. That's even more why when I first saw their name as a headliner I was shocked. They hadn't announced they were playing at Summerfest at that point. I celebrated Astro's gotcha day. (He had been adopted on July 10th, 2024). I went to see the live action version of How to Train Your Dragon with some friends. We were meant to have a beach day that day, but it was pouring rain that day. My friends CJ and Kaitlyn moved back into town after moving to Ohio in 2021 so CJ could do his residency. I went to 7 bridges for the first time with Astro in Milwaukee. We celebrated my 2nd cousins 80th birthday with a surprise party. My brother and sister in law played the lead roles in Midsummer Night's Dream at the end of the month.

August

I went to the State Fair. I took off work and explored Lake Geneva. I visited Independence Grove Dog Park again. I went to Irish Fest for the first time. I went to the Chicago Botanical Gardens to see a jazz band that is lead by one of the elders at Living Light. I went and saw Freakier Friday in theatres, and took Astro to the Windpoint Lighthouse at the end of the month. My friends Machaela and Trae moved back to Wisconsin after living in North Carolina since 2023.

September

Celebrated the semi beginning of Fall with a Gilmore Girls watch party at my friend Liz's. My cousin Danielle got married. Saw iDKHOW again, but in Madison. Took Astro to Pawfest in Milwaukee. (A dog festival). Saw "Big Bold Beautiful Journey" in theatres. Saw the original Spiderman in theatres. Took  Astro to Independence Grove Dog Park once again as well as Bark at the Park which was another festival for dogs but in Racine.

October

Another movie night at our apartment where we watched "Dirty Dancing." Visited Waterfall Glen Preserve with a group of friends in Illinois along with Astro. We walked rock to rock across a shallow stream. The fall colors had not kicked in yet, but it was still beautiful. When the fall colors did show up I took Astro for a walk at Pet's Park and he played in the stream and dog park there. I went to Richardson's Corn Maze which was Back to the Future themed for the 40th anniversary. Mary and I went with the young adults group at Homestead church.

November

Saw Les Miserables on Broadway in Milwaukee. Took Astro to a pumpkin patch in Franklin and then to the Caledonia Dog Park. Watched "The Thorn" with some friends. Went to a shadow box craft night. Saw Part 2 of Wicked on opening night with a coworker. We got together for dinner beforehand, and it was SOO good. Saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in musical form. (My sister in law was in the pit band.) Celebrated Thanksgiving with family.

December

Went Christmas shopping with a coworker at Gurnee Mills. Went to a dog Christmas market in Milwaukee with Astro. Astro tried a treadmill for dogs for the first time. Went home to celebrate Christmas, and got Christmas Eve off unexpectedly. Went to work for 2 days before coming back home to bring in the new year. For New Year's Eve my mom found games on Pinterest that we could do before midnight came.
