Life as a Christian

Today at church we had a lovely speaker, speak on what it means to live the Christian life.  I had prayed before I went to church that the teaching would impact me in some way, and the worship would be great since I would be going home for the summer and didn't know when I'd be back in Racine to go to the church again.  I was not disappointed.  The teaching made a lot of things clear for me, plus the teaching was given by the guy that I had listened to online giving inspirational teachings.  When they announced he would be speaking I actually shouted in excitement, I got some weird looks but that's okay. :) I encourage you to all listen to the teaching, as it will be posted on the Living Light website soon. This is my summary, and real life connection to the teaching done by John Lalgee.

The speaker started off by telling us to think about the royal baby in Britain (He's British), and to imagine being born into royalty.  Then he told us that we are the ones who were born into royalty due to being Christians.  That we were once just people of the Earth, but now we're way more than that.

Next, he told a story about how his life was falling a part at the age of 19, and he was desperate.  He sought out God in his time of desperation, and God brought the people into his life that he needed.  This had been me at the beginning of this year.  I didn't want God to be in control of my life when I started college.  I wanted to live life my way. (I was kind of stupid),  As you can probably guess that didn't work out for me.  I lasted a little over a month, before I felt totally broken.  I reached out for help, and God blessed me with strong Christian friends.  I'll never be able to comprehend how lucky I am for that.

We get used to things that were once wonderful for us. He said that a year after finding "your" church you begin to see it as less than wonderful.  I haven't had that experience with Living Light yet, but I know some of my friends who go to the School of Worship have faced this.  One of them told me how they kind of wish they could experience the School of Worship for the 1st time again because all the wonderful life-changing teachings just become an everyday thing for them after awhile.  We need to appreciate these things and remember them.  We need to be contagious people in our excitement for God.  The enemy causes us to lose sight of things, and makes things become distant to us.

John explained how the ideal Christian life would look, how we would want to grow up in a church family, get married to the perfect Christian wife/husband, and have children who grew up knowing how to love God etc.  He said though that, that life really isn't that Christian at all.  As followers of Christ our lives should mirror the gospel.  We can't really love this life and follow Jesus at the same time, we need to find life in Jesus himself.

To live a life such as Jesus did, we need to know what type of things made up Jesus's life in the 1st place.  When Jesus lived on Earth he had led a life of devotion, obedience, passion, servanthood, and was caught up with the idea of eternity.  God divinely provides for us when we do his will.  We need to be caught up with eternity as well.  It even shows in the Bible how Jesus was so set for eternity in Hebrews 12:2: "For the joy set before him, he endured the cross."  Jesus wasn't afraid to die, he was longing for it so he could be reunited with his father. Our lives should be readying our lives for eternity. We are born, born again, and then we die, so eternity is important, because just like one breath it's over so quickly.  Life is so short, but that doesn't mean it's meaningless.  We need to pour out our lives for God with the short life we have.

God deserves better than our complaining hearts.  We lost all of the things negative about us when we decided to go and follow God, so we didn't lose anything at all really.  God has shame for the people who feel so at home on the Earth, we can't be caught up in earthly things.

The last part of the teaching affected me the most, even though it's a concept that seems so obvious in the first place.  There will be no more pain or tears in heaven so death should actually be seen as a celebration, and it shouldn't make us as broken as it seems to do.  Dying is a gain! Growing older is also a blessing, because it means we will soon returned to God.  Society has created so many false ideas like the idea of mid-life crisis's, and diets.  Neither of those things matter when you're a Christian.  He ended with the idea that prophets would help us see things clearly for how God wants them to be seen.  Not with the blurry vision we see most things in the world with,

This wasn't a part of the speech but it came up during worship time.  The idea that God is like a heart surgeon, and we are the patients.  We must let God take control of the situation just like we would for a heart surgeon.  The concept of Godly glasses came up as well.  That we must see things as God sees them, not in a way that society has blurred them into being.

A Visit to my Future School

My mom came to the School of Worship open-house with me yesterday, and here are her thoughts on what she experienced.  Enjoy! :)  It really is a spectacular place and I'm so glad my friend Trae invited me to go with him one day.  My life would be so different without knowing about Living Light.

What an interesting morning I had with my daughter Alex on Friday, May 1st.  She has been going to church in Racine on Sundays while she’s in college that she has really enjoyed.  She had told me how different this church was from what she is used too.  And it concerned me a little since I've always grown up under the Catholic Faith.  However, having watched her grow in her Faith these past few months, how could I possibly try to pull her in a different direction?

She has grown so much!  When she comes home to visit she carries her Bible and reads it before going to bed and has bookmarks and pages highlighted and can remind me of a passage she read that might be similar to something we are dealing with.  It made me very proud.  I could have discussions with her about things I had read throughout life that tested my own knowledge of what I have learned over the years.  It’s been very nice and I think I finally see a passion in Alex that she’s always tried to explore here with me, but was always sidetracked by the “world” and not always looked upon as the sort of thing a “normal” teenager would embrace.

She always kept trying though.  In elementary school she was like the only child who actually loved Catholic Sunday school.  But because the other kids were disruptive and many times not receptive to the class, they learned very little.  I even removed her for a few years, bought the books they used and taught her at home until she was in middle school.  At that time, it got a little easier with kids starting to behave a “little better”, and her being a bit older could handle most of it.  She joined the churches student council to try to remain active.  One year I think I pulled her again and home schooled her because the teacher just could not keep the kids from bullying her.  Then in High School she went back and had this beautiful woman, Ann Hayden, who is an absolute Saint.  She also teaches Public High School deep in the city of Milwaukee where she KNOWS how to handle students.  So Alex felt safe with her.  While taking her classes at St. Peter’s she would go to Youth Group meetings at a different church in Jackson after being invited by a friend.  It wasn't a Catholic Church and she was afraid our family would be disappointed in her, but they didn't try to change her religion, they invited her to read from her Bible and discuss what she has learned as a Catholic. The kids at this Youth Group wanted to be there and were all so kind and loving, she was immediately in a good place. So she attended both.  She went to winter retreats with this new family and was able to go to Steubenville, a Catholic Youth Retreat with the kids from Slinger.  In the aspect of loving Christ, all of there treats were awe inspiring and she learned so many wonderful things.   But when looking for your place, there was a difference in how she felt with the people who surrounded her.  The Youth Group kids from Jackson were so kind and inviting.  Where, with the students she grew up with all her life in Slinger she felt far from that… They never really let her in their hearts or truly accepted her.  Of course they were beautiful young people who went with her because they were there on their own free will wanting also to be a part of God and to feel him and to know him and to deepen their Faith.  But it wasn’t the same.  She was still searching for her own place and her own people who would be there with her on this journey.

And I think she found it.  She had asked me a few months ago if I would go with her to an Open House her church was having on May 1st at a satellite location in Kenosha where they have a school of worship.  She had sat in on a couple of their classes before and since they were having an Open House she wanted me to see what it was all about.  I guess, even though she told me what church was like (very different from a Catholic Mass) I wasn’t really prepared for what I was about to encounter.  It was a bit overwhelming at first!  And I say that with respect!

From the moment I got out of the car we were met by two students (college aged kids) holding the doors open and welcoming you inside, asking you your name, where you’re from and those that knew Alex already hugged her, while they shook my hand.  Then inside we walk into the church sanctuary and a band is practicing for the morning service, all made up of more students who are all taught how to play an instrument or how to sing.  All yelling hello as we approach.  I saw chairs and I put my stuff down and was going to sit to read the “Open House” itinerary but there was no time!  More students poured in and each one took a moment to stop, introduce themselves, give out hugs and talk to us!  Normal everyday teenagers who looked like they had just gotten up and made it to school in the nick of time!  But none missing a beat in making sure they said hello.  Many of them from Europe who were here living with host families while they attended a 9 month course on learning worship.  A 9 month session that is nearing an end and as many of the kids shared with me, excited but yetnervous about going back home.

At home they have their families and friends that they miss very much, but here they are surrounded in constant love, all day, every day.   Here they are living a life of worship with God and everyone they are with are like them… so full of the Holy Spirit and able to spread the word of God without feeling threatened or set apart from others. At home they will have to focus on being back in their everyday life, many starting college in the Fall and afraid that they won’t be strong enough to keep teaching and spreading God’s word. All spending time praying while I was there, asking God to PLEASE not allow them to disappoint Him by faltering in their Faith once they are back home and on their own.

We started our morning at the Open House with a Music Ministry for 40 minutes. I was ready to sit down and listen to the band but no one sat down.  Everyone stood between the chairs and the front of the church, waiting for the music to begin.  Alex informed me that everyone dances.  I was like “Really?”  She said I could sit but I’d be the only one.  Well..whoa… I have no balance anymore with my MS and the thought of dancing seemed impossible, but I at least stood to be a part of the opening ceremony. Something that these students do every single day to get their day started!  And yep.. it was a great way to wake up and feel better about your day!

For forty minutes the band played Christian songs and the students listened to the words and would “Praise God”if that certain phrase meant something to them. When the music was loud and heightened some of the kids would jump up and down and the floor would shake and they just got so taken away in it all.  None of them touched another or even looked at each other.  They were all in their own worlds.  When the music would go to a quieter rhythm, some would reach for a microphone and read averse they marked in the Bible; sing a song themselves that they needed to just sing; or say a prayer of their own while the others yelled, “Amen” or “Praise you Jesus”, it was all so inspiring to see these beautiful young people completely and wholly embracing their Faith! How can I not appreciate what I was seeing?  Yes, it was different and strange to me, but it was also one of the most amazing things I’ve ever watched.  By the time it was nearing the end of the 40 minutes some of the kids were so overwhelmed that I saw some boys crying.  I just wanted to give them a hug but it seemed that this is their time… they are working out whatever it is with God Himself at that time and it really seemed inappropriate to approach them.

When Music Ministry was over we went for a small break before heading out to join in on some classes the students are finishing up for the year. At break I got to meet more of the students and learned how they absolutely love being there.  Not only do they teach you about worship but they teach you how to play keyboard and any other instrument you’d like to learn.  They told Alex that if she has the chance to take the 9 month worship classes to jump at it.  It was a dream come true for them!

The first class we sat in was a Music class on reading music and being able to write your own songs and what chords to choose.  We were completely lost but the class full of students were really knowledgeable about what would sound best and the teacher would play it in the chords they chose to see if it did sound okay.  It was really interesting!

The second class was Music also but dealt with picking out notes by just listening to a song and knowing exactly what they were.  That was harder for the students but many were able to do it very well. The teacher told us that none of them knew much about this before coming there but now they've been there long enough that they’ve come a long way.  It was very impressive.

The last class we sat in was supposed to be a Theology class but they had a special speaker that came in and he was fascinating too.  He hadn't seen these kids since they started in the Fall and his first discussion was on how they were feeling about going home.  He shared with him others that he’d seen who were so full of the Holy Spirit when they left there and now, years later, they let the real world of people’s criticisms get to them and they fell away from their own Faith.  And he agreed that it’s going to be hard.  That every day he has to fight the urge of allowing people’s cynicism to change him and chooses to keep spreading the Word of God without allowing them to take over his own spirit.   But it's hard!

He read verses from the Bible and asked each student to listen to the message and if they felt the need they should speak a prayer out loud in relation to that verse and how they interpret it in their own lives.  He said that’show you need to live your lives.  Read, pray and live it!

Many students would listen and then bow their heads and say a prayer asking God to please guide them based on what they just heard while the other students raised their hands and said, “Yes Lord, I want that too” or “Amen”…  It was mesmerizing… but even more so when he asked them all to pray in Tongues.  YES Tongues! Now that was a trip!  (To put it mildly!)  The whole room breaking out in Tongues, absolutely not making any sense to me but beautiful..  seriously, it was really something to behold and feel the outpouring of “real feeling” that they had coming from their souls.  I’ve never seen anything like it.  I've been always taught to be skeptical.  Catholics believe that in the beginning of the church some followers were given the gift of Tongues, but to just be able to speak it without some miraculous gift to the very few seemed as if that was how it was.  And to “pretend”that you have the gift was highly frowned upon. So Tongues always concerned me. But not then.  Right there in the moment, watching these kids fully engulfed in prayer and then speaking in Tongue was remarkable!  It’s not a language taught, its something you pray for and if your fully engaging with the Lord he will grant you the gift.  (And I know this because since leaving I did some research since finding it so engaging while I was there!)  What’s really exciting is that they mostly sound the same..  they make the same kind of sounds..  almost Arabic sounding in nature if you needed to somehow explain it.

In any case, all in all I learned a lot with only being with these people for 4 hours.  I can see why Alex feels so good about goingto church on Sunday.  They use the same music ministry to start their day and then they fully engulf scripture for another hour afterward.  She loves thatit is a 2 hour service!

It also made me realize how the majority of our world are Christians, yet only a handful embrace it like these students with their whole heart and soul. And it’s because we feel like people will be afraid to speak so openly about their Faith without being criticized or looked upon as someone to be afraid to talk to.  Someone who’s going to shove their ministry down your throat. When if we all just shared how we truly feel about God without being afraid all the time, we’d probably see that MOST of us already do have a strong Faith but also feel nervous about being more open.

I see now, after ALL these years that Alex has finally found that place that fits her soul.  That inspires the love she has always felt but couldn't explain.  A place that she feels she can be herself, share her Faith and not feel influenced by others who just didn't understand.   It looks like she has finally found what she’s been searching for all these years.  And in addition, besides the wonderful friends she already had, she also has a whole new group of friends who are absolutely amazing!  I am so happy for her and couldn't be more proud!

Praising God

Our teaching today in church was about praising God.  I took notes on what I thought would be the most important things to remember.

When we worship God at church we start out with having a worship band play music.  During this time of worship music, most people choose to dance and lift up their hands in the air.  One of the things I like about Living Light (my church) is that everyone participates to the fullest in worship.  They aren't afraid of what others around them will think like most churches, they just give it their all.
We are sometimes afraid to give our all in praise, just because what the other's will think around us.  Yes, we are humiliating ourselves, but it doesn't matter what anyone thinks around us.  Being concerned with what people think is a form of pride, and God likes humble people.  It doesn't matter what other people think, what matters is what God thinks.  It's a form of obedience, do what God is calling you to do in praise.

When you praise God, their should be evidence that you have praised him.  People around you should see that, that's what you are doing.  Thanking God silently is a totally different thing.  Praising God is hard, that is because it is a form of sacrifice.  Praising God, sacrifices our attention, pride, energy, and time.  We need to praise God even when we don't feel like it, or when he seems far a way.  Like when we hear bad news.  God is there to help us through these situations, he never leaves our side.

Praising God can be used as a weapon against the enemy.  A tip for ending a fight is to stop, and praise God for what he has done in your life, and usually the fight will end because you'll notice how much the fight didn't matter in the first place.

Here are a few verses you can check out, on the importance of praise or just praising God in general.
- 1 Peter 2 : 9-10
- Acts 16 : 23-25
-Psalm 51: 16-17
- Hebrews 13:15
- James 4:6
- Psalm 8:1-2

A Question I get A lot

There's a question I've been getting a lot lately since I've become a stronger Christian, and it hurts a little.  I know people aren't trying to hurt me when they ask this question, but it can sting a little.  This question is "Why does church make you so happy, why are you so obsessed with God?"  or a question that questions how strong of a believer I am.

When did it become the norm not to praise God?  When did it become the norm to instead have teenagers lose themselves in other things?  Why is it the norm for teenagers to go out and party and drink on Friday nights.  When being so in love with God become a questioned thing.  It didn't used to be this way.  It should be the other way around that it's seen as weird to go out and drink, but it's not and this is the world we live in. People don't understand the greatness I feel when at a church service or just worshipping God on my own time, unless they're like me too.

Even our youth group on campus, doesn't get treated the same as other organizations on campus.  We don't get all the other opportunities as all the other organizations on campus, because they are afraid of us for being a Christian organization.

The enemy (Satan) is trying to hurt God, by taking people who could be saved, and making them full into a pit of desires of the flesh.  Satan is hurting God by taking some of the souls that could be saved and bringing them to him.  One of the signs of the second coming of Jesus, is a world with disinterest in Christianity and God.  We have, and are becoming that more and more each day.

Weekly Prayer Chain

I guess the best ideas come to my head, when I should be sleeping.  (I decided to start my homework at 12:30, got distracted and now here we are at almost 4am).  (I guess I might need prayers to get through tomorrow, I did take a night nap and woke up at 12:30)

My idea was to list all the things each week that people need help praying for, and update it throughout the week as more prayers come in.  That way it can be sort of like a prayer chain, instead of only one or two people praying about a certain issue. So heres this week's list :D Please help us pray for these people.  I'm hoping to make a new list each week, of new prayers or progress of situations.

1) After so many weeks of being super happy, I broke down a little bit yesterday.  So I just pray that yesterday will be the only time in a long time that, that happens.  (A psychological study actually said if you feel really happy for a long period you need to feel sad to balance it out,so maybe that's what that was). But I'd much rather not feel like that again if possible :D

2) I pray for my summer once again, some things I don't agree with right now, but I know God will do whatever he needs me to do this summer.

3) I just pray for my future career path.  People ask me what I'm majoring in and I just tell them International Studies so I have an answer.  I really don't know if it's the right path for me.  My friend Jeremy's having a similar problem.  He can't stand his major or any of the classes hes in.  So I just pray that God puts him on the right path, and he would be happy with whatever God chooses for him.
4) I would also like to pray for Jeremy's grandparents,  His grandpa had to go to the hospital recently.  He's out of the hospital now, but still needs help with things, and his grandma is holding all of this stress with her, and hasn't been able to sleep.

5) I pray for Jeremy's mom's new job.  She got a new job teaching at a school with very little discipline and education.  It seems like she had to start from scratch at this new job.

6) I pray for Jeremy's dad's basement that flooded during the storm, almost 2 weeks ago now.  They had just redone the flooring.  So I pray that they can fix the source of the problem.

7) I pray for the last few weeks of school, as everything is wrapping up and there's a lot of chaos with final projects and exams.

8) I pray for my aunt and uncle Bonnie and Bruce who have been experiencing a ton of bad luck financially as well as with their health.  That they would have some great things happen in their life soon.
9) I pray for my grandma (Nana) who's had trouble sleeping recently because of having pain in her legs, that she is able to get some rest, and be healed of some of the pain she is experiencing.

10) I pray for my dog Luke, who is getting up there in age.  My family and I hope he at least makes it to his 13th birthday in July.  He's been such a great dog, and hes been there since I was pretty young, so its kind of sad for me to know, he doesn't have much longer.

11) Jeremy's grandma is now in the hospital as well, but is doing alright except for not being all mentally there, because of her husband's health problems.

-If you need something to be prayed for, let me know and I'll add it to the list.

Reaching My Goals and Becoming Outgoing

I had noticed that the Christian youth group on campus, was such a tight knit group of people.  I knew I wanted to be a part of that.  A goal I strived for. I would spend as much time as possible with the Cru people, hoping I would become part of the family.  A goal I was passionate about, but honestly didn't know if I could pull off.  But I looked at my friend group, and I didn't like what I saw minus Laurette (Shes had my back since Day 2 of college, love you girl.) I wanted something better for myself.  The people on 3 north who I had surrounded myself with for the most part all had a negative view on their life, their negativity didn't help me adapt to college.  It made things much harder, and more stressful.  I knew I needed more people like Laurette, who had a super positive view on life like 90% of the time.  We all have our moments of negativity of course, but its so much easier to hang out with people who are on fire for God.

Another goal I've had since I was younger was to be outgoing. I was always outgoing with my friends, but when it came to random people, I just never knew what to say.  I didn't like that about myself, I just wanted to be able to talk to anyone.  For the most part I think I've accomplished that goal.  Especially looking at the events that have happened recently.  People come to Cru now and they come to me, and see me as the girl apart of this amazing Cru Family.  I am able to greet the new people who come to Cru and have conversations with them,  The self-conscious feeling that people really didn't actually like me vanished when I could see the genuineness of everyone's actions around me.  I've gotten super close with everyone in Cru, and it just makes me very very excited.  I still can be shy, and I don't always know what to say, but I'm working on it, and God has blessed me so much this far.  Everything's great, and I can honestly say I have found my true friends here.  Ones who do stupid stuff with me, sing with me, make me laugh, or talk to me at the late hours of the night.  Praise God for blessing me with such relationships.
